I Have Taken Something For Granted

.

I Have Taken Something For Granted

Today I realized that all of my life I have been taking something very precious and important for granted; and that is the Beauty-Full Sparrow. This morning I see the sparrow in a new light, and what cause that was seeing and hearing a sparrow right outside my window effortlessly bounce around, and sing the most beautiful song I have ever heard. Then I heard another sparrow in the distance echoing the exact same song note for note in response. I have heard the songs of the sparrow before, however I attributed those songs to the more colorful exotic birds. That shows how narrow minded and programmed by man’s concept of beauty I have been. I always saw sparrows just as the local bird that was in abundance, and just simply ordinary; I was wrong in a number of ways. There is no part of creation that is ordinary; the sparrow is just as special to the Creator of all life as my five children are to me. The sparrow is beautiful and gracious, and it is full of the same Love that we are all full of. In addition, the sparrow’s song is so melodic that it is soothing to the soul. I will never look on the sparrow or any other part of creation as simply ordinary. I will always take the time to see the Divine Beauty in every part of creation, no matter how small it may be, or how abundant it may be.

Thinking about this brought to mind the poem by Maya Angelou entitled; “I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings”. Birds sing about freedom, and the beauty and oneness of nature. I believe that the sparrow and other birds sing about Love, the sun, the trees, the sky, the flowing lakes and rivers, and the bountiful harvest that is freely offered to them by Earth Mother. The song of the bird is joyous; it is a song of Love that we can listen to that uplifts our spirits in seconds because of its pure energy, origin, and Love. I believe the nature in which the bird sings its song, is that of gratitude. The bird in nature is a minister of song. Songs communicate directly to our spirits. That is why we must be careful the songs we sing, be it in actual song, or the song of the way we live our lives. Goddess/God has gifted the sparrow and all of the other songbirds of the air to us. We must do all that we can to make sure that the birds continue to be free and not caged. We must also continue to maintain their natural habitat of beauty and abundance, in the way intended for us to do by Great Spirit, so that they can in joy continue to serenade us with their Beautiful Melodic Sacred Songs of Love and Gratitude.

I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings

Maya Angelou

The free bird leaps

on the back of the wind

and floats downstream

till the current ends

and dips his wings

in the orange sun rays

and dares to claim the sky.

But a bird that stalks

down his narrow cage

can seldom see through

his bars of rage

his wings are clipped and

his feet are tied

so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings

with fearful trill

of the things unknown

but longed for still

and his tune is heard

on the distant hill for the caged bird

sings of freedom

The free bird thinks of another breeze

and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees

and the fat worms waiting on a dawn-bright lawn

and he names the sky his own.

But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams

his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream

his wings are clipped and his feet are tied

so he opens his throat to sing

The caged bird sings

with a fearful trill

of things unknown

but longed for still

and his tune is heard

on the distant hill

for the caged bird

sings of freedom.
